Arthur Cheney Train Biography

Arthur Cheney Train (September 6, 1875 – December 22, 1945) was an American lawyer, novelist, and short-story writer best remembered for his legal fiction and for creating the shrewd, humane attorney Mr. Ephraim Tutt. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, and trained at Harvard University and Harvard Law School, Train brought first-hand legal experience to his fiction after serving as an assistant district attorney in New York County.

His courtroom background gave his stories unusual authority, allowing him to blend legal procedure, moral argument, humour, and suspense.

Train wrote novels, short stories, essays, and true-crime works, often drawing on the tensions between law and justice. His best-known books include Tutt and Mr. Tutt, By Advice of Counsel, Courts and Criminals, The Confessions of Artemas Quibble, and Mortmain. The Mr. Tutt stories were especially popular for their sympathetic defence of ordinary people caught in complex legal situations. Train also co-authored early science-fiction works with physicist Robert W. Wood.

Today, his writing remains of interest to readers of classic legal mysteries, courtroom drama, crime fiction, and early twentieth-century American popular literature.
