Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer, poet, and literary critic, best known for his macabre and Gothic tales of horror and mystery. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Poe was orphaned at a young age and later fostered by the Allan family, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. Despite financial and personal difficulties throughout his life, Poe wrote prolifically and contributed significantly to the development of the short story genre. Some of his most famous works include "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Poe's writing often focused on themes of death, insanity, and the supernatural, and his unique style and use of symbolism and metaphor continue to influence modern literature today.
