The Uncommercial Traveller Excerpt

Short Summary: In this collection, Dickens adopts the persona of the 'Uncommercial Traveller' to present a series of essays and sketches that explore various facets of Victorian life, from bustling city streets to quiet country lanes, providing a rich tapestry of observations on human nature and society.

"Allow me to introduce myself—first negatively. I am not by any means a Commercial Traveller. I have never lived by the road, or in the inn, or on samples. I am both a town traveller and a country traveller, and am always on the road. Figuratively speaking, I travel for the great house of Human Interest Brothers, and have rather a large connection in the fancy goods way. Literally speaking, I am always wandering here and there from my rooms in Covent-garden, London—now about the city streets: now, about the country by-roads—seeing many little things, and some great things, which, because they interest me, I think may interest others.

I am the Uncommercial Traveller, and I am always on the road. I am a constant wanderer, and I am always seeing something new. I am always meeting with adventures, and I am always making discoveries. I am always encountering strange characters, and I am always hearing strange stories. I am always observing the manners and customs of different classes of people, and I am always noting the peculiarities of different places. I am always on the lookout for anything that may amuse or instruct, and I am always ready to communicate what I have observed.

I am the Uncommercial Traveller, and I am always on the road. I am a perpetual tourist, and I am always taking notes. I am always collecting materials for my literary wares, and I am always ready to dispose of them to the best advantage. I am always seeking for novelty, and I am always finding it. I am always in search of the picturesque, and I am always discovering it. I am always hunting after the curious, and I am always lighting upon it. I am always in quest of the whimsical, and I am always stumbling upon it. I am always pursuing the eccentric, and I am always overtaking it. I am always chasing the grotesque, and I am always capturing it. I am always following the odd, and I am always coming up with it. I am always tracking the singular, and I am always running it down. I am always dogging the quaint, and I am always fetching it to bay. I am always on the scent of the humorous, and I am always running it to earth. I am always in full cry after the ludicrous, and I am always bringing it to ground. I am always in hot pursuit of the laughable, and I am always securing it. I am always in chase of the droll, and I am always making it my own. I am always in pursuit of the comical, and I am always laying hold of it. I am always in quest of the funny, and I am always getting possession of it. I am always in search of the amusing, and I am always appropriating it. I am always on the lookout for the diverting, and I am always annexing it. I am always in quest of the entertaining, and I am always acquiring it. I am always in search of the mirthful, and I am always obtaining it. I am always on the watch for the jolly, and I am always securing it. I am always in quest of the merry, and I am always making it mine. I am always in search of the gay, and I am always getting hold of it. I am always on the lookout for the lively, and I am always catching it. I am always in quest of the sprightly, and I am always seizing it. I am always in search of the vivacious, and I am always grasping it. I am always on the watch for the buoyant, and I am always clutching it. I am always in quest of the light-hearted, and I am always laying hands on it. I am always in search of the cheerful, and I am always appropriating it. I am always on the lookout for the blithe, and I am always annexing it. I am always in quest of the gleeful, and I am always acquiring it. I am always in search of the jocund, and I am always obtaining it. I am always on the watch for the jocose, and I am always securing it. I am always in quest of the facetious, and I am always making it my own. I am always in search of the waggish, and I am always laying hold of it. I am always on the lookout for the sportive, and I am always getting possession of it. I am always in quest of the playful, and I am always annexing it. I am always in search of the frolicsome, and I am always acquiring it. I am always on the watch for the jester-like, and I am always obtaining it. I am always in pursuit of the capricious, and I am always securing it. I am always in chase of the whimsical, and I am always capturing it. I am always tracking the eccentric, and I am always overtaking it. I am always dogging the peculiar, and I am always bringing it to ground."
