The Story of the Amulet Excerpt
Short Summary: Siblings Cyril, Anthea, Robert, and Jane reunite with the Psammead and discover a magical amulet that allows them to travel through time. Their quest to find the amulet's missing half leads them to ancient civilizations and future utopias, all in hopes of reuniting their family.
"The children were playing in the garden of their London home when they stumbled upon a familiar, yet unexpected, sight. There, half-buried in the flowerbed, was the Psammead—their old friend from past adventures. 'You!' exclaimed Anthea. 'We never thought we'd see you again!' The Psammead, with its wrinkled, sand-colored skin and snail-like eyes, looked up at them with a mixture of annoyance and relief. 'Yes, it's me,' it grumbled. 'And about time you found me. I've been waiting ages.'
As they conversed, the Psammead revealed that it had been captured and sold to a shopkeeper, from whom it had narrowly escaped. 'But that's not the worst of it,' it said. 'I've lost something precious—an amulet. It's broken in half, and without the other part, its power is incomplete.' Intrigued, the children pressed for more information. The Psammead explained that the amulet had the power to grant one's heart's desire, but only when whole. 'We must find the other half!' declared Cyril. 'But how?'
'The amulet can take you to different times and places,' the Psammead explained. 'Through time, you may find the missing piece.' With that, their new adventure began. Holding the amulet, the children found themselves transported to ancient Egypt. The sun blazed overhead as they stood before a grand pyramid. 'This is incredible!' Robert exclaimed. 'But where do we start looking?'
Their journey took them to various ancient civilizations—Babylon, Atlantis, and even a utopian future. Along the way, they encountered historical figures, witnessed monumental events, and learned valuable lessons about courage, friendship, and the importance of family. Each adventure brought them closer to finding the missing half of the amulet and, ultimately, to reuniting their own family."
