It is my earnest hope that in the present awakening of Japan, her moral nature will prove to be more essential than the intellectual. The soul of Japan is not to be found in her mimicry of the West, but in her own vision. I have seen in this land the spirit of reverence, of beauty in simplicity, of duty fulfilled with dignity and joy. These are not the signs of decay but the glimmers of immortal culture.

True liberty is not in the uproar of self-assertion but in the self-control of spiritual discipline. Japan, with her deep traditions and her spiritual heritage, must not forget this in her pursuit of power. For when the foundation of life is shaken, the edifice of civilization crumbles.

Therefore, I appeal to the youth of Japan, who have the gift of great intelligence and energy, to take up the responsibility of harmonizing the spiritual with the material, the ancient with the modern, in the spirit of sacrifice and creative love.
