"The fly! Yet, this tiny being, so common, so despised, hides secrets worthy of our attention, mysteries that the patient observer can unveil."

Fabre continues: "Let us then, with the eye of the naturalist, follow the fly in its daily pursuits. Here, on a piece of meat exposed to the sun, she alights. With marvelous precision, she selects a spot, lays her eggs, and departs. In a few hours, these eggs hatch into larvae, those white, wriggling creatures we call maggots. They feed, grow, and, in a short time, transform into pupae, from which emerge new flies, ready to continue the cycle. This rapid development, this prodigious fertility, ensures the perpetuation of the species, despite the countless dangers that threaten its existence."

Reflecting on the fly's place in nature, Fabre observes: "But the fly is not merely a prolific breeder; she is also a scavenger, an indispensable agent in the sanitation of our environment.
