The Home and the World Excerpt

Short Summary: Set during the turbulent Swadeshi movement in early 20th-century Bengal, The Home and the World explores a woman's inner conflict between her loyalty to her enlightened husband and her attraction to a charismatic nationalist leader.

It was the second day after my return from Calcutta. I had hoped that Bimala would have spent the evening with me. But she excused herself, saying that her head ached. That she should make an excuse like this was new to me. The whole evening I sat alone in my room, turning over in my mind the strange expressions on her face which I had seen that morning.

In the meantime, the world outside our estate had changed. Sandip had come to town, a man of passion, of slogans and storm. His ideas were catching fire in the hearts of our youth. And yet I wondered—could we sacrifice truth for the sake of the nation? Must love die for patriotism to live?
