Wells uses the spiritualist atmosphere to create a puzzle in which the supernatural may be only a cover for deliberate deception.
Alongside the family drama runs the murder of Gilbert Blair. McClellan Thorpe is suspected, yet the evidence is uneasy, and the case becomes entangled with forged messages, hidden motives, and the strange influence of the medium. The result is a layered mystery in which disappearance, murder, fraud, and mistaken belief all connect.
Pennington Wise brings the master-detective structure, but Zizi is especially important here. Her curiosity, intuition, adaptability, and boldness allow her to follow clues others miss, including the links between Peter Crane, the séances, and the Blair murder. Her investigation gives the book much of its liveliness and pace.
