Black Beauty Excerpt

Short Summary: Black Beauty tells the story of a horse's life, from his idyllic youth to the challenges of harsh treatment under different owners, highlighting themes of compassion and ethical care for animals.

"The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. Some shady trees leaned over it, and rushes and water-lilies grew at the deep end. Over the hedge on one side, we looked into a plowed field, and on the other, over a gate at our master's house, which stood by the roadside. At the top of the meadow was a grove of fir trees, and at the bottom a running brook overhung by a steep bank.

As soon as I was old enough to eat grass, my mother would go out to work in the daytime and return in the evening. She often told me about her own upbringing and how important it was to be gentle and well-mannered.

'Do your work with a good will,' she said. 'Lift your feet well when you trot and never bite or kick, even in play.'

This advice stayed with me throughout my life, helping me to adapt to various owners and circumstances. Whether I was treated kindly or cruelly, I always remembered my mother’s wisdom. In every stable, I saw the best and worst of human behavior.

There were kind owners who gave me a warm bed, proper food, and gentle hands. Others, driven by ignorance or greed, subjected me to harsh treatment. Through all these experiences, I learned that patience and hope were my strongest allies.

One such owner, Farmer Grey, was a kind man. He always spoke to us in soft tones and treated all his animals with care. I longed for more owners like him, and in his presence, I felt safe. But life, as I would soon learn, was rarely so consistent."
