A Little Traitor to the South Excerpt

Short Summary: A Southern girl risks her life and love in a daring Civil War mission that tests her loyalties and her heart. Editha’s courage is as fierce as her conviction, but will the cost be too high?

"If they knew I had crossed the lines, they would call me a traitor," Editha whispered, her voice trembling as much from resolve as from fear.

The woods were thick and wet with Southern rain. She pulled her shawl closer, clutching the papers beneath it. Her father’s cause meant everything to him—but so did the life of the Union soldier she had come to know.

"Editha! What madness is this?" he cried, catching up to her at the edge of the river.

"I had to warn them. Even if it costs me my name, my place—my life," she said, her eyes locked on his. "Don’t you understand? Right is not always where we are born."

The far-off thunder of cannon reminded them of what hung in the balance. Honor. Blood. Love. Her heart beat louder than the war drums.

"Then go," he said softly. "Go before my duty overtakes my love."

She turned, a silhouette of courage against a backdrop of fire and history.
