William Morris (1834-1896) was a prominent British artist, designer, writer, and socialist. He was born in Walthamstow, London, into a wealthy family, and showed an early interest in art and literature. He went on to study at Oxford University, where he became interested in medieval art and literature.
Morris's early career was as an artist and designer, and he became particularly well-known for his wallpaper and textile designs. He was one of the founders of the decorative arts company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.
