William Morris (1834-1896) was a prominent British artist, designer, writer, and socialist. He was born in Walthamstow, London, into a wealthy family, and showed an early interest in art and literature. He went on to study at Oxford University, where he became interested in medieval art and literature.

Morris's early career was as an artist and designer, and he became particularly well-known for his wallpaper and textile designs. He was one of the founders of the decorative arts company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later known as Morris & Co.), which produced a wide range of products, including furniture, stained glass, and tapestries.

Morris was also a prolific writer, producing poetry, fiction, and essays on art, literature, and politics. He was a committed socialist and played a key role in the formation of the Socialist League in 1884. He was also an active member of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which sought to promote traditional craftsmanship and to counter the effects of industrialization on the arts.
