Timothy Shay Arthur (1809-1885) was an American author, best known for his short stories and novels that dealt with the moral and social issues of the time. He was born in Pennsylvania and began his career as a teacher and editor. In 1844, he published his first book, "The Sphere and Duties of Woman," which became a bestseller. He went on to write over 50 books, including "Ten Nights in a Bar-Room," "The Gentleman from Indiana," and "The Night Side of American Society." His work often dealt with themes of temperance, poverty, and the plight of women and children in society. He also wrote under the pseudonym "Edward Lytton." He died in 1885 in New York.
