Shepherd Knapp Biography

Shepherd Knapp (September 8, 1873 – January 11, 1946) was an American clergyman and author, recognized for his contributions to religious literature and his dedicated service in various congregations. Born in New York City, Knapp pursued higher education at Columbia College, graduating in 1894, and later obtained his Bachelor of Divinity from Yale College in 1897.

           

Following his ordination, Knapp served as pastor at the First Congregational Church in Southington, Connecticut, from 1897 to 1900. He then became the assistant pastor at the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City between 1901 and 1903. His most extended tenure was at the Central Congregational Church in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he served from 1908 until his retirement in 1936.

           

Throughout his career, Knapp authored several works, including History of the Brick Presbyterian Church (1908), On the Edge of the Storm (1921), and Old Joe and Other Vesper Stories (1922). In his retirement, he focused on writing The Liberated Bible: The Old Testament (1941), where he retold Old Testament stories. He was also known for his poetry and short plays, contributing to the Bohemians, a literary club of which he was a member.

           

Knapp passed away on January 11, 1946, leaving behind a legacy of religious service and literary contributions that continue to inspire.
