M. R. James Biography
Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was an English medievalist and ghost story writer, who is considered as one of the masters of the genre. He was born in Goodnestone, Kent, and was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. James began his career as a medievalist, becoming a Fellow and Tutor at King's College, Cambridge, and later a Provost of King's College, Cambridge.
James is best known for his ghost stories, which were published in several collections, including "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" (1904), "More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" (1911), "A Thin Ghost and Others" (1919), and "The Collected Ghost Stories of M. R. James" (1931). His stories are characterized by their supernatural elements and their focus on the supernatural and the occult. James's stories were highly influential in the development of the horror genre and continue to be widely read and adapted for film and television. He died on 12 June 1936 in Eton.
