Herman Melville Biography

Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet born in New York City in 1819. He is best known for his epic novel "Moby-Dick" published in 1851, which is considered one of the greatest American novels of all time.

Melville was born into a wealthy family, but his father's business failed when he was a child. After a failed attempt at college, Melville went to sea as a sailor and traveled to the Pacific Ocean. He spent several years as a sailor and had several adventures, including being held captive by cannibals in the South Pacific.

Melville returned to America in 1844 and began writing about his experiences at sea. He published his first book, "Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life," in 1846, followed by "Omoo: A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas" in 1847. In 1851, he published "Moby-Dick," which was not well received by the public but has since become one of the most famous works of American literature.

Melville continued to write throughout his life, but he did not receive much recognition for his work. He worked as a customs inspector for the New York Harbor in the later part of his life. He died in 1891 and is now remembered as one of the greatest American writers of all time.
