H. Beam Piper (March 23, 1904 – November 1964) was an American science fiction writer, best known for his extensive Terro-Human Future History series and the novel Little Fuzzy. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Piper was largely self-educated, acquiring knowledge in science and history independently. He began his professional life working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, including roles as a laborer and night watchman.
Piper's writing career commenced with the publication of his first short story, "Time and Time Again," in 1947 in Astounding Science Fiction. This story was later adapted for radio programs such as Dimension X and X Minus One. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, he gained recognition for his science fiction works, particularly the Terro-Human Future History series, which depicted a future history of humanity. His novel Little Fuzzy (1962) was nominated for a Hugo Award and remains one of his most celebrated works.
Despite his literary contributions, Piper faced personal and financial challenges. In November 1964, he tragically took his own life in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Posthumously, his works have continued to influence the science fiction genre, with many entering the public domain and being reprinted or adapted by other authors.
