John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish author, historian, and politician who is best known for his thriller novel "The Thirty-Nine Steps". Born in Perth, Scotland, Buchan was educated at the University of Glasgow and Brasenose College, Oxford.

After completing his studies, Buchan pursued a career in law and became a barrister in 1901. He also began writing in his spare time, producing a wide range of works including novels, biographies, histories, and essays. His most famous work, "The Thirty-Nine Steps", was published in 1915 and became an instant success.

During World War I, Buchan served as a director of the Intelligence Department in the British government. He was later elected to Parliament as a member of the Conservative Party and served as the Governor General of Canada from 1935 until his death in 1940.

In addition to his literary and political pursuits, Buchan was also a keen outdoorsman and wrote extensively about his love of nature and adventure.
