William Tatem Tilden Biography

William Tatem Tilden II (1893-1953) was an American tennis player and coach, widely considered one of the greatest players of all time. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began playing tennis at a young age. He won his first major tournament, the U.S. National Championships, in 1920 and went on to win it six more times, a record that still stands today. Tilden also competed in the Olympics, winning a gold medal in the doubles event in 1924. In addition to his playing career, Tilden was also a successful coach, training several top players including Fred Perry and Bobby Riggs. He also wrote several books on tennis, including "The Art of Lawn Tennis." Tilden died in 1953 in Los Angeles, California. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1975.
