Sax Rohmer was the pen name of Arthur Henry Ward, a British novelist born on February 15, 1883, in Birmingham, England. He was the son of a civil servant and began his career as a journalist before turning to writing fiction.

Rohmer is best known for creating the character of Fu Manchu, a diabolical mastermind and criminal genius of Chinese descent. The character first appeared in a series of short stories in the early 20th century and became popular in both England and the United States.  Rohmer wrote more than 20 novels featuring Fu Manchu, as well as numerous other works of fiction, including detective stories and adventure novels. His writing often reflected the fears and prejudices of the era, with Fu Manchu serving as a symbol of the perceived threat of Asian immigrants.

In addition to his writing, Rohmer was also a keen observer of the occult and wrote several books on the subject. He died on June 1, 1959, in White Plains, New York, at the age of 76.
