Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) was a French poet, known for his Symbolist style and his influence on the development of modern French poetry. He was born in Metz, France and began writing poetry as a teenager. He moved to Paris in 1862 and became a part of the literary scene, where he met and befriended other poets such as Arthur Rimbaud and Stéphane Mallarmé. He published his first collection of poems, "Poèmes saturniens," in 1866, which established him as a significant voice in French poetry. His work is characterized by an emphasis on emotion, imagination and beauty, and often dealt with themes of love and nature.

In 1871, Verlaine had a tumultuous relationship with Rimbaud, which ended with Verlaine shooting Rimbaud in the wrist. This event led to Verlaine's imprisonment for two years. After his release, he struggled with alcoholism and poverty for the rest of his life. Despite this, he continued to write and publish poetry, including "Romances sans paroles" (1874) and "Sagesse" (1881). He died in poverty in Paris in 1896. He is considered one of the most important poets of his time and his work continues to be widely read and studied today.
