Miguel de Unamuno was a Spanish philosopher, writer, and educator, who lived from 1864 to 1936. He was a leading figure in the Spanish intellectual world during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and his work focused on the themes of individualism, freedom, and the search for personal meaning.

Unamuno was born in Bilbao, Spain and studied at the University of Salamanca where he later became a professor of Greek and Latin literature. He was appointed rector of the university in 1901 and during this time he published a number of books and essays on philosophy, literature, and politics. He was an advocate of individualism and freedom, and he criticized the authoritarianism of the Spanish government, which led to his dismissal from the university in 1912.

Unamuno's most famous work is the novel "Niebla" (Mist) published in 1914, in which he explores the existential questions of identity and personal meaning. He also wrote plays and poetry, and his work has been translated into several languages. He was considered a major influence on the Generation of '98, a group of Spanish intellectuals, who sought to modernize Spain's cultural and political landscape.

Unamuno died in Salamanca in 1936, during the Spanish Civil War. His work continues to be read and studied today and is considered an important representation of the Spanish intellectual tradition.
