Mary Hunter Austin (1868-1934) was an American writer and feminist, known for her work on the culture and history of the American Southwest. She was born in Carlinville, Illinois and moved to California with her family in 1887. She married Stafford Wallace Austin in 1891 and they settled in the Mojave Desert. Austin began to write about the landscape, culture, and people of the desert, and her work became a major influence on the development of the regional literary tradition. She wrote several novels, including "The Land of Little Rain" and "The Ford." She also wrote essays, plays and short stories. She was a member of the women's suffrage movement and a vocal advocate for women's rights, and was a prominent figure in the literary and artistic circles of the time. Austin died in 1934 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
