John Muir Biography

John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland on April 21, 1838. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1849, settling in Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but dropped out after a few semesters. After a series of odd jobs, he spent several years traveling and working in the western United States, including a stint as a shepherd and several months working in a sawmill. In 1868, he settled in California and began exploring the Sierra Nevada mountain range. He wrote extensively about his experiences and the natural beauty of the area, and his writings helped to establish the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park. He also founded the Sierra Club, an environmental organization dedicated to the preservation of wilderness areas. He died on December 24, 1914.
