John Jacob Astor was an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist who lived from 1864 to 1912. He was born into a wealthy family and inherited a vast fortune from his father, William Astor, who was a prominent real estate developer and one of the wealthiest men in America at the time.

Astor was educated at some of the best schools in the country and began his career in the real estate industry, following in his father's footsteps. He quickly established himself as a successful businessman and real estate developer, becoming one of the wealthiest men in America. He also invested in other industries such as shipping, oil, and manufacturing, and was a major shareholder in the American Fur Company.
