George Grossmith (1847-1912) was a British actor, comedian, singer, and playwright, best known for his work in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He was born in London and began his career as a comedian and performer in the 1870s. He quickly became a popular performer and was soon performing in London's West End. In 1881, he met W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, and began performing in their operas, including "The Mikado," "Iolanthe," and "The Yeomen of the Guard." He also wrote several plays, including "The Dashing Little Duke" and "The Wicked World." Grossmith continued to perform in Gilbert and Sullivan operas until the early 1890s, when he retired from the stage. He died in 1912 in London.
