Fritz Reuter Leiber Biography

Fritz Reuter Leiber (1910-1992) was an American writer of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a literary family; his father was the famous Shakespearean actor Fritz Leiber Sr., and his mother was a notable actress and sculptor.

Leiber began writing in the 1930s and published his first science fiction story in 1939. During World War II, he served as a chemist in the U.S. Navy, but after the war, he returned to writing and quickly became one of the most respected and influential writers in the genre.

He is best known for his series of stories and novels featuring Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, a pair of roguish adventurers in a fantasy world. He won numerous awards for his writing, including the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards.

In addition to his fiction writing, Leiber was also a poet, essayist, and literary critic. He was a regular contributor to the magazine "Fantasy and Science Fiction" and wrote several books on Shakespeare and the theater.

Leiber died in 1992 in San Francisco, California, at the age of 81. His legacy as a pioneering and influential writer of speculative fiction continues to this day, and his work has inspired generations of writers and readers.
