Edwin Arlington Robinson Biography

Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) was an American poet who is known for his incisive and often melancholic portrayals of small-town life and its inhabitants. He was born in Head Tide, Maine, the third son of a wealthy family, and spent much of his childhood reading and writing poetry.

Robinson published his first collection of poems, "The Torrent and the Night Before," in 1896, but it wasn't until the publication of his third collection, "The Children of the Night" (1897), that he gained critical acclaim. The collection included the poem "Richard Cory," which would become one of his most famous works.

Despite his success, Robinson struggled with poverty and personal demons throughout his life, including alcoholism and a failed marriage. He continued to write and publish poetry, however, and in 1921 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his collection "Collected Poems."

Robinson's poetry is characterized by its spare, unadorned language and its focus on the lives of ordinary people. He often explored themes of alienation, disillusionment, and the crushing weight of social expectations. His work has been praised for its realism and psychological depth, and he is considered one of the most important American poets of the early 20th century.
