Colette Biography

Colette (1873-1954) was a French novelist, writer, and performer. She was born in Burgundy, France, and grew up in the countryside. She began her career as a performer in the music halls, using the stage name "Colette." She later married Henri Gauthier-Villars, also known as "Willy," who was a writer and publisher.

Colette wrote her first novel, "Claudine à l'école," under the name of her husband. The book was a huge success, and she went on to write several more Claudine novels. In the early 1900s, she left her husband and moved to Paris, where she became involved in the literary and artistic circles of the city.

Colette is best known for her novel "Gigi," which was later adapted into a musical and film. She also wrote several other novels, including "Chéri" and "La Vagabonde." Her writing style was known for its sensual and feminist themes, and she was considered a pioneer of the modern French novel.

Colette was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1945, and she continued to write and perform until her death in 1954. She is remembered as a trailblazer in French literature and as a talented performer who paved the way for women in the arts.
