British Poet Laureate is an honorary position appointed by the monarch of the United Kingdom on the advice of the Prime Minister. The holder is expected to write verse for significant national occasions.
Awarded annually since 1901 to an author from any country who has produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction".
