H.G. Wells (1866-1946)
H.G. (Herbert George) Wells was born on 21 September 1866 in Bromley, Kent, England, to Joseph and Sarah Wells. Joseph Wells was a professional cricketer, his mother had been a domestic servant.
Herbert had an accident aged seven and was bedridden with a broken leg. To pass the time he started reading and soon became hooked.
A failure as an apprentice draper, Wells began a career in education. First as a student and later as a part-time teacher. 1895 was a watershed year for Wells when he had several of his stories published. In 1897 he published The Invisible Man and his writing career took off.
Herbert George Wells died at home on 13 August, 1946, at 13 Hanover Terrace, Regent's Park, London.
