Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812 in Landport, Portsmouth, Hampshire, the second of seven children of John and Elizabeth Dickens. His father was a clerk in the Naval Pay Office and was sent to debtors prison when Charles was twelve. Aged fifteen, Charles became an office boy at a firm of solicitors and taught himself shorthand. The following year Charles found work as a court reporter and by the age of twenty he was a shorthand reporter at the House of Comons and was writing short stories using the pen-name 'Boz'.
His full-time writing career began in 1836 when Dickens was commissioned to write the Pickwick Papers in twenty monthly installments.
Dickens' punishing work schedule and extensive reading tours began to affect his health in later life and on 8 June 1870 (after a full day's work on Edwin Drood) he suffered a stroke and he died the following day. He was buried in Westminster Abbey on 14 June 1870.
